In a financing contract signed on April 13, 1973, the Rexroth Foundation undertook to support the action program of Deutsches Aussätzigen Hilfswerk (now: Deutsche Lepra- und Tuberkulosehilfe) to combat leprosy.

In 1977 the Foundation declared its willingness to support research into medication for leprosy, starting with the Borstel Research Institute near Hamburg, and since 1987, the newly founded Hansen Institute in Würzburg. A total of EUR 1.8 Mio. has been donated for this research.
