Founded in 1973, the association "Goldenes Herz" grew out of a post-war Christmas campaign initiated by journalists in Lohr to help the poor and those in need in the town and the surrounding area through gifts of money and goods.

What began as a once-yearly initiative was to be turned into a permanent institution, born of the recognition that one-off campaigns could not adequately meet the needs of the area's poor. The impetus for founding the association came from Georg Ludwig Rexroth, who served as its first chairman from that point on.

Even in our so-called affluent society there are people who are poor and unable to overcome their hardships by their own means. The association's particular concern is to help the sick and disabled, large families and the unemployed who are burdened by particular difficulties, and all those whose pensions barely exceed the welfare threshold. It does not seek to take the place of state social services, but to step in quickly and without red tape where public assistance is not available. Thanks to our support, the association has been able to help effectively in many cases since its founding.

Today the association is led by the former mayor of Lohr, Ernst Prüße (Chairman), and Ulla Menzel (Deputy Chair).

Total funding to date amounted to EUR 0.2 million.
