In a grant agreement concluded on 13 April 1973, the Rexroth Foundation committed itself to supporting the programme of the Deutsches Aussätzigen-Hilfswerk (today the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association) in combating leprosy.

From 1977 onward the foundation undertook to support research into medicines against leprosy: first at the Borstel research institute near Hamburg, and from 1987 at the newly established Hansen Institute in Würzburg. In all, EUR 1.25 million was made available for research.

Total funding to date amounted to EUR 1.8 million.
